Are there any HMRC scams concerning the COVID-19 virus?

HMRC is aware of COVID-19 Coronavirus SMS scams telling contractors they can claim a ‘goodwill payment’ or claim a tax refund to help protect themselves from the Corona outbreak.

Contractors should not reply to the SMS or open the email and do not open any links in the message.

This is an example of the scam wording:

‘As Part of the NHS promise to battle the COV-19 virus, HMRC has issued a payment of £258 as a goodwill payment. Follow link to apply’.

HMRC is also aware of a phishing campaign telling contractors they can claim a tax refund to help protect themselves from the Coronavirus outbreak.

In both instances, do not click on the link and/or provide any personal data.
