Are there penalties for not submitting my self-assessment return on time?

Yes, there are automatic interest and penalties apply for failure to file your tax return and pay your tax on time – even if you have no tax to pay or are due a refund.


There is an automatic £100 late filing penalty if your 2019/20 self- assessment return is not submitted by 31st January 2021. Further penalties arise for late submission arise as follows:

  • £10 per day – charged once the return is 3 months late for a maximum of 90 days;
  • The higher of £300 or 5% of the tax due – applied if the form is 6 months late; and
  • A further £300 or 5% of the tax due (whichever is higher) – applied if the form is 12 months late.
